Dr. Xiuren Zhang obtained his Ph.D. and postdoctoral trainings in plant molecular biology and RNA biology in Cornell University and Rockefeller University, respectively. He has joined Texas A&M for 16 years and now the Christine Richardson Endowed Professor at department of biochemistry and biophysics and a jointly appointed professor at Department of Biology. He is also affiliated with interdisciplinary programs of genetic and genomics as well as molecular environmental plant science
Dr. Zhang is a world-wide preeminent scholar in the field of RNA biology and plant sciences. Dr. Zhang is recognized for his ground-breaking work in functions and mechanisms of RNA silencing that can ively switch off the genes in the cells. Dr. Zhang has also pioneered a new field of RNA remodeling that can control RNA fates via changing RNA shapes. As the sole corresponding author, Dr. Zhang has published paradigm-shifting discoveries in Cell (IF, 45.6), Nature (IF 50.5). Nat. Cell Biol. (IF 17.3), Nat. Plants (15.7), Sci. Adv (IF 11.7), and Dev. Cell (IF, 10.7) among other premier journals. Dr. Zhang’s serial achievements have been reported at least 20 times by national and international news media.
Dr. Zhang has attracted more than $16 million dollars (with 14-million dollars to his own lab) in research funds from NIH, and NSF among other agencies. Dr. Zhang has given talks or keynote lectures at over 60 national and international scientific meetings. Dr. Zhang serves as an editor or editorial board for Nature Original, Nature Horticulture, and aBiotech among other international journals. Dr. Zhang has held memberships in professional societies including American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Zhang has been training 67 undergraduate researchers, 1 master graduate, 10 PhD students, 13 postdocs; and 4 junior or middle-career faculty cross campus. Dr. Zhang has also served in the advising tee for 34 graduates.
Dr. Zhang has received Agrilife Faculty Fellow, Presidential Impact Fellow, Chancellor EDGES Fellow, and an earlier NSF CAREER award, recognizing his excellence in research.
